This week is North Carolina Archives Week, a time when we celebrate the institutions and people responsible for maintaining and making available the archival and historical records of our nation, state, and communities. To commemorate this week, we in the State Archives have had a Civil War exhibit and a film fest. Over on our Civil War blog we’re celebrating by writing a blog post a day about some of our favorite Civil War items in our collections, including:
- Chris writing about a petition to secede from secession;
- Tiffanie continuing her focus on Civil War diaries by writing about the third diary of William H. S. Burgwyn (you can also read her entry on the second diary, called by some the Diary of Both Sides);
- And Bill telling the story of a Union Army attempt to “win hearts and minds” in North Carolina while struggling with internal conflict during the early stages of the Civil War.
All blog posts link to items available in the North Carolina Digital Collections. So if you find the early blog posts interesting, please check back during the rest of the week for more favorite items posts by other members of our staff.
