As I mentioned earlier this week, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company performs tonight and tomorrow at the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC), . If you want to read more about what other people are saying about the upcoming performances, there are several new articles on The Thread include “The Tedious Side of Merce,” which looks at the experimental nature of his work, and a “Merce Cunningham Media Roundup.”
In honor of the last performances by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, I’ve added The Ruse of Medusa program to the Black Mountain College collection in the North Carolina Digital Collections. If you’ve never heard of the BMC production of the play by Erik Satie, the cast included Buckminster Fuller, Isaac Rosenfeld, William Shrauger, Elaine de Kooning, Merce Cunningham, and Alvin Charles Few. It was directed by Helen Livingston and Arthur Penn with dance by Merce Cunningham and music performed by John Cage.
Addendum: there’s also an interview with Patricia Lent on The Thread ; she used to be a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and gives a lot of wonderful insight into Merce Cunningham as an individual and an artist.
