The State Library of North Carolina’s NCpedia (formerly eNCyclopedia) site was launched in beta in April as an online encyclopedia of articles about North Carolina. It was created through a partnership between the State Library of North Carolina, North Carolina State Archives and NC LIVE and, if you go to the “About NCpedia” page, you can read about how the project began as brochures published in the 1970s to answer basic reference questions about the state and then evolved (through the use of the content management system Drupal) into a series of searchable topical entries.
Some of the NCpedia articles include illustrations drawn from our collections and in particular from the photographs available through our Flickr account maintained by Non-Textual Materials Archivist Kim Cumber. Some of those articles include:
- Birth and Development of the Modern Furniture Industry
- From Revolution to Reconstruction
- History of Governorship in North Carolina
- William Sidney Porter (O. Henry), September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910
- Plott Hound (State Dog)
- Robert Walter Scott (Governor: 1969-1973)
In addition to visiting the site itself, you can also follow NCpedia on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ncencyclopedia for announcements of articles and the latest news about the project.
